Cody Cotrell
Hello, my name is Cody Cottrell -Tekayanalow^nas`e. I am an enrolled member of Oneida Nation and a member of the wolf clan. I also descend from Chippewa, Stockbridge, Pequot, and German peoples and I previously served as Chair on the Oneida Nation Arts Board. I am also a member of the selection committee for the Oneida National Treasure Award and a founding member of the Cornhusk Collective.
In my own practice, I use a variety of different mediums that include but are not limited to stained glass, digital art, design, murals, metalwork, fabrication, and sculpture. Materials I have used for sculptures are stainless steel, concrete, acrylic, corn husk, cutlery, foam, wood and clay. My style can be flexible to the needs of my clients but my work is primarily inspired by nature and traditional indigenous symbols, stories, language, and methods used in a contemporary setting.
As a Native American, I grew up with the inherent belief that we are not above nature, but a part of it. Today, we continuously serve as climate advocates and water protectors and conservationists for the natural world, because we would not be here without it. I am continuously looking for consistent work to further develop my skills, experience and career by networking, and collaborating with people who are as equally as passionate as I am. I hope to be a full-time artist with a business of my own, to inspire my children, and to help further strengthen the sovereignty of my people and other indigenous communities through art and connect us back to nature.
