Bert Benally

Artist Bert Benally, a Diné (Navajo) from the Navajo Nation, currently resides in Sweetwater. AZ. He has three children and one grandchild. He is currently employed as an 6-12 H.S. Art teacher in Rock Point, AZ. His outside activities include providing creative music/art outlets for the local youth, participating in church activities, and collecting music for his hobby as a DJ. Benally has a BFA – Sculpture from Arizona State University, MFA – Sculpture from University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a MEd – Education from Washington State University and is currently a EdD doctoral candidate at Teachers College – Columbia University.
Benally’s interests lie in modern technology, techniques, and materials, which greatly influenced his approach in re-interpreting the traditional imagery and culture of the Diné People. Additionally, this approach of combining the old with the new, the western with non-western, has also led to creative and unique collage of traditional sounds of Native America with the electronic music in his DJ’ing. The philosophy of balance and harmony is at the base of the majority of his work and ideas.
